High Standard Firearms was an American manufacturer based in Houston, Texas, known for its high-quality firearms. Originally founded in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1926, the company started as a supplier to various firearms manufacturers in the Connecticut Valley. From 1932 to 1945, High Standard operated in New Haven before relocating to Hamden, Connecticut, where it continued production from 1946 to 1977. In 1977, the company moved to East Hartford, Connecticut, where it remained until 1984. High Standard became particularly well-known for its target pistols, which were available in models chambered in .22 Short and .22 Long Rifle, designed for competitive shooting. A key selling point was the similarity in grip angle and manual safety placement to the M1911A1 series, a staple in service pistol competitions. Produced from 1926 until 2018, High Standard pistols are widely regarded as classic .22 target pistols and were commonly seen in national-level NRA Bullseye competitions. Notable models include the High Standard Victor, Supermatic, Supermatic Trophy, and Olympic. Today, High Standard firearms remain popular among collectors.
