WTS: Heckler & Koch P9S Combat Handgun. Double Action, Caliber 9mm Para, with 4 Magazines and 3 New Recoil Buffers – Sarasota, FL – Willing to Ship to Where it is Not Restricted

Background:
The P9S was a bizarre pistol. It harkened back to the days where HK tried to show the world that the delayed blowback system is a premier design for operating mechanism. They put it in the G3, HK33, and naturally the MP5. They didn't stop there but went whole hog across the board and put it on the P9/P9S and the SL6/SL7 hunting rifles as well.

The P9S is a stamped steel gun (meant for economical manufacturing) with some fancy machining for the bolt head, bolt head carrier, and the barrel with the barrel extension. Those who are familiar with the G3 / HK33 family would recognize these aforementioned parts right away.

The P9/P9S was designed back in the late 1960s and manufacturing stopped some times in the early 1980s. One would have thought that HK had learned the lessons of designing overly complicated pistol-operating mechanisms from Luger, Borchadt, Roth-Steyr, Savage, Remington, et al. Nope. Gotta be "different" - German Engineering and all that.

This particular handgun was manufactured in 1976 and imported to the U.S. by SACO of Arlington, VA. It has been sitting in the safe unfired for the past 36 years. Since I have no plans on taking it out to the range, I would rather let an HK handgun collector/shooter enjoy it.

Condition:
This handgun shows little wear, has great combat sights. The bore is clean and bright and has strong rifling. The grips are in good condition. The mechanics appear to be in perfect working order.

Features:
. Double Action/Single Action
. Trigger is also adjustable with the optional mechanism that comes with the Target model. Trigger pulls are damn good by any standard. Single Action break is clean and crisp though with extremely long yet audible reset. Double Action is smooth and relatively light, and does stack a bit at the end. If you pull it à la SW style then it works great. Pull it à la Colt style and you get a nasty stack before breaking
. Stationary barrel with polygonal rifling and right twist. The barrel does not tilt or move à la Browning style operating mechanism. However, unlike other fixed-barrel pistols, it is not pinned to the frame either but easily removable by the operator
. Fluted chamber
. Roller-delayed locked bolt system
. On the left side of the handgun, there is a lever (Cocking Lever in HK's parlance) that goes up and down. You can use it:
- As a Slide Lock/Slide Release lever by pushing up on it to lock and pushing down on it to release.
- As a hammer drop device but you have to make sure that the Safety Lever is on Safe, then you depress the Cocking Lever all the way down, and for the coup de grace you pull the trigger to let the hammer down. At this point the handgun is in Double Action mode and you can flip the Safety Lever to Fire and carry it this way (refer to Operator's Manual Page 6 of 19).
- As a hammer cock device (hence the moniker "Cocking Lever"). If you desire to carry the handgun in Single Action mode after dropping the hammer, you can recock it by pushing down hard on the Cocking Lever again until the hammer is cocked and locked in Single Action mode – of course doing these manipulations while the Safety Lever is on Safe.
. The slide mounted safety selector (up for Fire, down for Safe with the concomitant white dot and red dot that is an HK's favorite for color coding their safety mechanism) does not drop the hammer, but disconnects the hammer from the firing pin. What that means is you can pull the trigger and the hammer will drop when the handgun is on Safe. It won't fire though. Trust the Safety Lever and German engineering
. High profile fixed sights with white fill in front and red fills in the back
. Heel magazine release
. Internal hammer with a cocking indicator
. Vertically positioned extractor. The empty case comes out the top instead of the side. The extractor also acts as a Loaded Chamber Indicator
. Grip is a single, removable plastic unit with a thumb rest for the left thumb. It works pretty well in real life even with combat style gripping of the handgun by the shooter. The grip angle helps the gunpoint very well for the single-hand shooter
