Pre-War Winchester model 70 Listing ID: 1454766
Description
Winchester model 70, .270WCF (.270 Win) manufactured 1942 according to Winchester book. This is the last year for pre-wars. The .270 chambering was produced much less than the .30Gov't 06, making this one rarer than most. Action is smooth and the bore looks good.
I would rate it "Good" condition.
Metal: some blueing loss. No major pitting. Markings are crisp and fully legible. Barrel is 24" long, as would be correct, to take full advantage of the velocity of the .270 cartridge.
Bolts/screws: All present and in good condition.
Stock: butt was cut long ago and a recoil pad installed. Maybe '60s? There is a small, very shallow crack near the bolt handle which has been repaired. Doesn't go all the way through. Looks like someone repaired a place that was beginning to chip, perhaps.
Sling swivels: missing. Rear hole for sling swivel has been filled with epoxy. Could be drilled out.
Sights: has front sight, although the sight hood is missing. Missing rear sight (I believe it would have had a dovetail blank installed at one point because of the peepsight).
Peepsight: Lyman 48WJS. This would have been the correct peepsight one could order from the Winchester factory in 1942. The later ones were relieved at the bottom so as to not have to trim the stock to fit. This one, the stock has been trimmed (at the factory perhaps, if it was ordered with the peepsight) and the sight fits flush.
Trigger: this has a Canjar target trigger which breaks clean at 2.0lbs on my scale. If you're familiar with Canjar triggers, you know how good they are. Trigger shoe is wider than factory and the poundage is fully adjustable.
Safety: correct "flag" safety, 3 positions. Many of these were converted to the later "wing" safety to allow for easier operation under a scope. This one appears original.
